I found Kuna through a friend and old colleague, Paul Hogger, who is currently circumnavigating with his wife, Lisa, aboard their stunning 55ft Bruce Roberts International, Lorelei. Paul was the first person I ever met when I walked into Adreno Spearfishing with the embarrassingly girly problem of not being able to load my speargun. Having a wife who spearfishes as well, Paul was amazing – he spent a good hour or more showing me how to rig a new shaft and longer rubbers for my speargun, plus a better loading technique that worked wonders.
Not long after, I chanced upon a job at Adreno, the World’s largest dive store, after meeting the Founder’s daughter, playing Underwater Hockey with her, and then going to the National spearfishing championships with her and her Dad – Tim Neilsen. I have now happily worked at Adreno for the past five years! It’s so comical how things work out.
But I digress….
Paul has been my sailing godfather for a few years now when I occasionally get a spark of excitement about the sailing life and hassle him for information on sailing costs, lifestyle, yacht choices and more. In January 2016 I was sending Paul links to smaller 28ft boats exclaiming that I wanted to live and cruise on one, when he rightfully told me to get my starry eyes off those boats and just listen…
Paul wisely talked me into looking for a larger yacht, one I could sail anywhere and everywhere, live and sleep comfortably on, and most importantly big enough to carry my toys – mostly spearfishing gear, but eventually a SUP board, kayak, and tender big enough to dive from… Honestly, Paul writes the most passionate and detailed responses I have ever seen, and sometimes his comments give me so much hope or inspiration that it makes me tear up – that’s how much passion he writes with!
After explaining why I need a larger yacht, Paul went and looked at lots of yachts on boatsales.com for me. Out of hundreds, he picked just one. “It would need a little cosmetic tart up and a bit of paint and varnish inside, but would be a very good boat with a strong hull, rig and engine… That’s my pick”, he said. That was good enough for me!
I called the owner, booked flights, and was in Adelaide the next weekend to meet Kuna…
